Abstract

This literature review examines effective approaches for teaching English in early education, with particular attention to the use of gamified and game-based learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts for young learners. The study seeks to synthesize existing research in order to provide an organized overview of how these instructional approaches are implemented and what learning outcomes are commonly reported. Using a literature review design, selected peer-reviewed journal articles were examined through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns related to instructional practices and learning outcomes. The findings suggest that gamified and game-based learning approaches are often associated with higher levels of learner engagement and favorable developments in vocabulary acquisition among young EFL learners. In addition, the reviewed studies indicate the use of a variety of instructional strategies, such as interactive gameplay and task-based activities, alongside a range of digital tools and learning media designed to support early language learning. Overall, the review highlights that gamified and game-based learning may represent promising instructional approaches for early EFL education when integrated thoughtfully into classroom practice. The findings may help contribute to a clearer understanding of current research trends and inform future instructional design and research in early English language education.
