Abstract

This study was conducted at Pardamean Private Elementary School in Medan to examine the learning process in fifth grade, with a specific focus on the level of student participation during learning activities. Data collection used direct observation methods in the classroom and interviews with the fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Situmorang. From the results of the observation, it appeared that the majority of students still showed passive attitudes. They generally waited for instructions from the teacher and were not accustomed to taking initiative, so the learning process tended to be one-sided. The teacher had tried to provide explanations to the best of her ability, but activities that actively involved students were not yet optimal due to limitations in media and time. The learning media used are still limited to textbooks and blackboards. Through interviews, the teacher said that the application of various learning strategies has not been fully effective due to inadequate facilities and the diversity of student abilities. Based on these conditions, the researcher developed a preliminary concept in the form of simple media such as flash cards, question cards, student discussion sheets, and learning modules that can help teachers create a more interactive learning environment. Although these media have not been tested, their design is tailored to the needs of elementary school students and is expected to support increased student engagement and reduce the tendency for one way learning.
