Abstract
Introduction ; This study aims to explore the relationship between Self-Regulated Learning (SRL), epistemological beliefs, and English language proficiency. SRL plays an important role in determining the effectiveness of a person's learning strategies, including how they manage their time, motivation, and monitor their academic progress. Meanwhile, epistemological beliefs reflect a person's beliefs about the nature of knowledge and the learning process, which can affect how they understand and internalize English language materials.
Method ; This study involved 246 students from campuses in Indonesia who participated in research on the relationship between English language proficiency, epistemological beliefs, and SRL. Data were collected through questionnaires related to the learning process and epistemological beliefs, as well as the self-regulated learning strategies they applied. Factor analysis showed a significant pattern of relationships between SRL, epistemological beliefs, and English language proficiency. The results found that individuals with high levels of self-regulation tend to have better English language proficiency, especially in language comprehension and production.
Results ; In addition, participants with more developed self-regulated learning—such as an understanding that knowledge is complex and can develop—showed a more effective learning approach, which ultimately improved English language skills. Multivariate analysis confirmed a strong relationship between the study variables, with results showing that SRL had a positive contribution to English language skills, while epistemological beliefs helped shape participants' mindsets towards language learning.
Discussion and Conclusion ; Thus, this study contributes to the development of more effective learning methods in academic contexts. The findings confirm that approaches that support Self-Regulated Learning and English ability can improve English language skills, making it important for educators to design learning strategies that encourage self-regulation and understanding of English ability in order to achieve optimal learning outcomes.
